Meet Emma and Her Mom
Emma Bear’s Journey began with one little girl and a family determined to find a way forward.
I’m a mom of four girls, including my daughter Emma, who is nonverbal and has complex medical needs. Our life looks a little different from what I once imagined, and much of my time is spent balancing Emma’s care, raising her sisters, working, and keeping our family moving forward.
Emma has faced more medical challenges than any child should have to, but there’s so much more to her than her diagnoses. She has a big personality, her own way of communicating, and a determination that continues to amaze me.
Over the years, I’ve learned things I wish someone had told me sooner. That’s why I started sharing our journey — not because I have all the answers, but because I know how much it can mean when another parent shares something that actually helps.
My hope is that through Emma’s story, other families can find useful information, feel less alone, and get to know the amazing little girl behind it all.
Emma has taught us that progress doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Some days bring exciting breakthroughs. Other days are difficult. But every day has something worth celebrating.
Our journey has introduced us to challenges we never anticipated, but it has also introduced us to incredible people, resources, products, and strategies that have helped Emma navigate everyday life.
Emma’s Story
Emma was born with hydrocephalus and later developed craniosynostosis during her first few months of life. She was also diagnosed with a chromosome deletion and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy.
Over the years, Emma has faced countless surgeries, hospital stays, and medical challenges. But her diagnoses are only one part of who she is.
She’s funny, determined, full of personality, and has her own way of communicating with the people who love her. She’s taught me more about strength, patience, and love than I ever imagined.
This is Emma’s journey, and it’s also part of mine.
Why Emma Bear’s Journey?
We call her “Emma Bear” because she has always been our little bear — strong, determined, sweet, and completely herself.
We received a teddy bear for her as a baby gift before she was born. We would ride around with “Bear” in Emma’s car seat, and somehow that little bear became part of our story. We knew it would be her nickname as soon as we met her.
Her journey continues to teach us that there isn’t always one right path. Sometimes you have to create a new one.
